I began to develop this program two years ago when I decided to become a Big Sister to 9 year old Huong through Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America (BB/BS), founded in New York in 1904. I was drawn to Big Brothers/Big Sisters because of its commitment to children and I wanted to be a part of that commitment. BB/BS matches mentors with children who need stability and companionship. Since I was so blessed to have mentors throughout life, this is one way for me to make a similar contribution. |

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America is a wonderful organization. It fosters positive role modeling, one-on-one mentoring, relationship building, and character development through personal interaction. Teachers and parents report improvement in attitudes, self-confidence, grades, trust and relationships when mentors become involved with children. Once a match is made, goals are set and regular contacts are maintained between parent, child, volunteer and staff. We strive for positive changes, for heightened self-worth, as well as better relationships and performance at home, at school and at play. |

I have benefited so much through my mentoring experiences. Not only have I changed a child's life, but that child has also changed mine. Huong has helped me develop my Magic of Mentoring program, giving me feedback on what "littles" appreciate most. She even helped me design my logo. It's my hope to encourage others to volunteer... open your heart and share the magic! |
