| Tamara "Tammy" Korican,
Miss River Raisin Festival 2010, has a Bachelor of Science degree in
Nutrition from Michigan State University and also received her
Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University. Upon
receiving her BSN, she was accepted into a unique nurse residency
program at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, and is now a full-time RN at
Sparrow.
A public servant in the area of disabilities since her early teen
years, she has adopted a platform reflective of her passion for the
special care those with long-term illness or disabilities face,
"Family-Centered Care of Chronically Ill and Disabled Children." Her
work with those facing physical challenges range from therapeutic
horseback riding to outdoor experiences at Hidden Lake Gardens.
As Miss River Raisin Festival she has worked for a number of
organizations supporting chronically ill and disabled children from
Children's Miracle Network, the national platform of Miss America
and Make-A-Wish to Cystic Fibrosis and the Queen for a Day Special
Days camps. Her plans are to expand to the Ronald McDonald House,
Special Olympics and more.
She is a marathon runner having completed the Detroit Free Press
full marathon and six half marathons; a classical pianist; an
equestrian specializing in jumping; a gardener; and she loves a
broad range of crafts, especially cross-stitching. At MSU, she was a
member of the polo team. She also hunts and learned to scuba dive on
the Great Barrier Reef during one of her three trips to Australia.
Among her travels was a trip through Italy to bring her Latin
studies to life.
